Pierre Poulain: Managing Director

Pierre Poulain

Managing Director

Pierre has 20 years of senior management and business experience, in the Marine, Engineering, and Naval Defence sectors including serving in the Royal Canadian Navy as both a Marine Engineer and a Combat Systems Engineer. He is passionate about the marine industry and is proud to lead Vard Electro Canada in its global endeavours in the shipbuilding industry.

Along with his background in the Navy and electrical engineering, Pierre has a proven record in business development and operations management. He holds an MBA from Saint Mary’s University, a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Dalhousie University, and a Marine Engineering Diploma from Institut de Marine de Rimouski. He is fluent in both French and English.

Faye Xuan: Director, Strategy Delivery

Faye Xuan

Director, Strategy Delivery

Faye has been with Vard Electro Canada since it was incorporated in 2016, and she brings over 18 years of electrical engineering and business professional experience from industries such as shipbuilding, LNG, energy management, manufacturing, materials handling, and government.

While completing her engineering degree, Faye was a reservist in the Royal Canadian Navy and served on the HMCS Preserver. After graduating, Faye spent years as an automation, controls, and electrical engineer for automotive plants and consulting companies. She completed her MBA specializing in entrepreneurship and marketing at UBC Sauder School of Business and started her career as a business professional with focus on program management and business strategy. At Vard Electro Canada, Faye provides strategic directions and execution plans for the business to ensure we are on the right path.

Kamen Stoykov

Director, Business Development and Marketing

Kamen has extensive experience in the maritime industry and before joining Vard Electro Canada he spent 10 years at MAN Canada as both a Technical Manager for power plants and as the Sales and Project Manager on marine projects. He has been involved in recent Canadian naval projects and many commercial projects for the ferry and fishing industry on the East and West coast.

Kamen has a master’s degree in marine engineering from the Naval Academy in Bulgaria and began his career as a sea-going marine engineer on board vessels for different ship owners like Navibulgar and K Line, Japan. When he moved to Canada, he continued to work for Canadian divisions of companies involved in the marine industry such as Wartsila, L-3 MAPPS, and Liebherr in shore based positions.

Steve Shannon: Director, Programs

Steve Shannon

Director, Programs

Steve brings decades of program management experience across a range of disciplines and has a background in the defence and governmental markets. With his expertise in quality management and the implementation of business process change management, Steve was appointed as Vard Electro Canada’s first Director of Programs in 2019. He oversees all operational projects including the implementation and continuous improvement of the company’s quality management system.

Steve also had a full career in the air force as an engineering officer, specializing in avionics and radar systems. He has a thorough understanding of defence and governmental programs with a focus on the creation of effective teams. Steve brings his passion for delivering on flawless project performance and customer satisfaction to the teams and customer alike.

David Mates

Director, Engineering

David joined Vard Electro Canada in 2020 bringing over 25 years of experience working previously at MDA in complex systems engineering in the aerospace and defense industry. During his time at MDA, David worked his way up within the engineering team and for 10 years served as Engineering Manager for all subsidiaries at MDA in the Information Products business segment, and most recently as Principal Engineer in the Defense Surveillance and Intelligence line of business.

David has a Bachelor of Science Honours degree from Queen’s University, as well as a master’s degree and PhD in Combinatorics and Optimization from the University of Waterloo.
